Guest Speaker: Erik Hanberg

Erik Hanberg is great at presentation, very clear voice and specific in details. However, the details of his work seem very time consuming and tiring. Without actual knowledge of his actual income, it comes across as-  entrepreneur required many different successful businesses’ venture to survive. This seems rather discouraging because it is already difficult to make one business to work.

It seems part of his work is a hobby which is great. I notice all of his ventures seem to uses the web to aid the distribution or promotion of his product and services. This is a very useful idea for anyone planning on starting a business.

3 Business Ideas

Ideas below would implement creating a website to support the service- i.e. forums, using Google ads  to make additional revenue or main.

1. General computer, phone, electronic repairs/services

2. Tax preparer

3. Translator

Startup.com

The plot was predictable, but still enjoyable. I found the facts that Tom and Khali spending hundreds thousand of dollars to developed a barely functional website. Even though unprofitable expenses are normal in business, I would of thought developing a website would be much cheaper and easier than this. The other interesting thing was how these too friend, young and and naive, were quite successful. They started with just an idea of traffic ticket, and seem to develop the plan and adapt as they progress.

I thought their opposite personality traits compliments each other well, Tom with the technical skills and Khali take care of the business section. Overall, even though this business did not work out due to poor timing, they got so much experiences and knowledge from it they could use.

What I want to get out of this class

As an Accounting major, my plan is to get a normal 9 to 5 job. However, the lecture today, Tuesday 13th [about what if you can’t find a job? What is the backup plan?] left me intrigue. Business school preaches new business often fail, thus I never considered a plan to start my own business. The idea is interesting, and I wouldn't mind learning the details.

I am looking forward to learn the planning process involves starting a new business. The details, hopefully included, could be legality issues, start up fees, and risks. I am mostly looking forward to hearing the idea of incorporating technology into a small business. The number of possible application of technology into a business sounds interesting.
